Nomadic Monastery Festival
Once a year the Litang Monastery packs up and heads about 50 km away. The set up camp and all the nomadic Tibetans from the surrounding area come to pray with them. The monastery has over 800 monks, they camp in white tents, the head lama in a white tent with colourful fringe, and the nomads camp in black tents. Most of the day is spent in prayer and preparing yak butter. The camp consumes over 1000 kilograms of yak butter per day. We spent the morning visiting with the monks and the nomads, watching them pray and melt yak butter.
