Las Vegas East. Behind the glitzy (read tacky) casino strips, watch and jewelry stores, expensive restaurants, there still remain a few beautiful vestiges of the small Portuguese enclave that once was. Nineteen colonial buildings here are protected under UNESCO, the most famous being the remains of Saint Paul's, built by the Jesuits in the 17th century, destroyed by a kitchen fire when the building was being used as a military garrison in the late 19th Century.
